APW - Waltham, Samuel Curtis, Roxbury, serial #944, 15J, 17S, silver OF original engine turned case with hallmarks of eagle and anchor, cuvette engraved “Made for Warren Pratt, New Ipswich, NH,” white enamel dial, KWKS, diamond endstone, gilt mvt, s#944. An excellent original example of this historically important early grade. Warren Pratt was born in 1820 and moved to New Ipswich, NH in 1854. At this time Pratt was in the jewelry business, but shortly after Pratt made a career change due to his declining eyesight and became a manufacturer of cigar boxes for a period of 24 years. Mvt: Ticking sluggishly at times, overhaul recommended, near mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, strong gilt tone, few mild spots, two mild curved fine scratches to right of barrel arbor, one mismatched plate screw; flawless dial; fair hands, hour and minute with oxide and finish loss; case shows very light wear, no dents or dings, very small nick on band at 4, good engine turning detail with mild reduction at shoulder, rear lid with small amount of side-to-side play at hinge, cuvette with some solder excess visible at portions of planchet seam; bow pivots freely and with some side-to-side play within pendant sockets; good glass bull’s-eye crystal.
